Shane Jewell, executive director of OK Mozart, will address OK Mozart’s No Child Clef Behind program and the lineup for this year’s OK Mozart festival.

Jewell has served as executive director of OK Mozart since 2009, and has overseen the festival’s evolution from a strictly classical event to a 10-day multi-genre musical festival that draws visitors from throughoutthe region.

This year’s festival features musical acts in the genres of classical, jazz, blues, folk and roots music. In their continuing effort to keep the arts and music relevant in schools, Jewell has helped implement OK Mozart’s new music-education program, No Child Clef Behind. The program helps raise funds for the purchase of musical instruments for students who are interested in music, but do not have the means tobuy their own instruments.

In addition to helping put instruments in the hands of Oklahoma students, No Child Clef Behind utilizes OK Mozart’s 27-year history with house orchestra Amici New York, to facilitate a year-round mentoring program with elementary music students and Amici New York musicians via webcam. These students are then given the opportunity to meet their Amici mentors in person and see them perform on stage at the OK Mozart festival held each year in Bartlesville.

This year’s festival will take place June 8-17, and will include concerts in both Bartlesville and Oklahoma City. The lineup includes artists such as Esperanza Spalding, Jamye Stone, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, John Fullbright and Kyle Dillingham. The festival will also include a number of “crossover shows,” in which musicians from diverse musical genres will join each other on stage to create new and innovative sounds. More information about the festival and purchasing tickets can be found at okmozart.com.

HEADLINERS

Honoring Sharon Daugherty and Steadman Upham

Invitations are in the mail!

What: Tulsa Headliners Awards

Where: Cityplex Towers, 60th floor

When: Thursday, May 10

Time: Reception begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner and presentation

Theme: “You’re the Tops.”

Tulsa is a fantastic place to live, work and raise a family, thanks to some of the city’s outstanding leaders. Their positive contributions to the city often make the news.

The Tulsa Press Club has honored these “Headliners” since 1956.

This year’s Tulsa Press Club Headliners are Sharon Daugherty, co-founder and pastor of Victory Christian Center, and Steadman Upham, Ph.D., president of Tulsa University. They will be recognized at a fundraising dinner May 10 at the Cityplex Towers. The evening will feature a reception, dinner and special presentation.

“The Press Club has been privileged to be associated with some of the biggest local names in business, philanthropic and civic leadership through our Headliners event,” said President Mike Miller. “This year is the same. It’s our pleasure to honor two great Tulsans, Sharon and Steadman.”

The club defines Headliners as “truly outstanding civic, business, professional and industrial leaders whose unselfish contribution to the growth, welfare and culture of Tulsa have made them Headliners in every sense of the word.”

Daugherty founded Victory Christian with her late husband, Pastor Billy Joe Daugherty. Victory Christian Center operates a school for 1,300 students, has summer camps, local and worldwide outreach missions, an international Bible institute, youth programs, and a community health clinic. It also includes job fairs for those looking for employment. The church is one of the largest in the world and has more than 17,000 members.

Upham assumed the Tulsa University presidency in 2004 and is scheduled to retire from the post in June 2012. His administration has been highlighted by strengthening academic quality of students and faculty, maintaining strong enrollment, adding more than a million square feet of state-of-the-art facilities, and preserving fiscal stability without layoffs or program cuts during one of the most turbulent economic times in U.S. history. Working alongside the TU Board of Trustees, he also oversaw the university’s largest comprehensive campaign, which has raised more than $500 million to date.

Honorary co-chair Dr. Mark Rutland, president of Oral Roberts University, will introduce Daugherty, and Honorary co-chair Steve Turnbo, chairman emeritus of Schnake Turnbo Frank PR and 2011 Headliner recipient, will introduce Upham.

These new honorees join a prestigious group. Previous Headliners include Keith Bailey, Henry Bellmon, Chester Cadieux, Nancy Day, Dr. Warren Hultgren, Stan Lybarger, Wilma Mankiller, Michael Wallis, Henry Zarrow and many others.

The dinner is a fundraiser for the Tulsa Press Club and its foundation, which provides scholarships to Oklahoma journalism and communication college students. Event co-chairs are Jeremy Burton, director of public relations for Oral Roberts University, and Missy Kruse, president of Write-Co. Other committee members include Susan Ellerbach, Paula Hall Collins, Melani Hamilton, Michael McCulloh, Mercedes Millberry, Ashley Parrish and Amanda Thrash.

Sharon Daugherty

Sharon founded Victory Christian with her husband, the late Pastor Billy Joe Daugherty, in 1981. Victory Christian Center is the faith home to a congregation of more than 17,000 Oklahomans, one of the largest in America. Together the Daugherty’s established Victory Christian School, Victory Bible Institute, Victory World Missions Training Center, and the Tulsa Dream Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which provides food, clothing, medical, educational and recreational services to Tulsans.

Daugherty is the host of “Victory in Jesus,” a daily broadcast that is transmitted via satellite to more than 200 nations. She is the author of several books including “Known by Your Fruit,” “Avoiding Deception,” and “What Guys See that Girls Don’t or Do They?” She has been a worship leader and songwriter over the years, having produced 12 music CDs.

Daugherty is a graduate of Oral Roberts University with a bachelor’s of music education. She also attended Christ For The Nations in Dallas, Texas. She is on the board of the Tulsa Dream Center, Empowered 21, and is the Oklahoma State Director for Christians United for Israel.

Steadman Upham

Dr. Steadman Upham currently serves as the 17th president of The University of Tulsa, a position he has held since 2004. Upham has announced that he plans to retire in June 2012. Prior to coming to TU, he served as president and chief executive officer of Claremont Graduate University, a doctoral research university and a member of the Oxford-style consortium known as The Claremont Colleges in Claremont, California. Upham received his Ph.D. degree in anthropology in 1980 from Arizona State University. In 1981, he joined New Mexico State University where he held the positions of chief archaeologist and assistant professor of archaeology.

His administration during his tenure at TU has been highlighted by strengthening academic quality of students and faculty, maintaining strong enrollment, adding more than a million square feet of state-of-the-art facilities, and preserving fiscal stability without layoffs or program cuts during one of the most turbulent economic times in U.S. history. Working alongside the TU Board of Trustees, he also oversaw the university’s largest comprehensive campaign, which has raised more than $500 million to date.

Under Upham’s leadership, TU has made notable advances that include:

The creation of more than 20 endowed faculty positions and more than 300 new scholarships.

An increase in the academic quality of the student body, reflected through rising median ACT scores from 26 to 29 and median SAT scores from 1220 to 1260 among incoming freshmen classes.

The successful public-private partnership to assume management and development of the city-owned Thomas Gilcrease Museum.

Expansion of interdisciplinary research, including creation of institutes in fields such as nanotechnology, bioinformatics, alternative energy, trauma and abuse, and information security.
